"I see no relationship between my art making and headaches/migraines."

(Email to Klaus Podoll, June 7, 2004)

"The color orange worsens my migraines."
(Email to Klaus Podoll, June 7, 2004)

"I have a ) a migraine b ) terrible pain from inflamed sinuses c ) a stress and tension headache d ) all of the above. I think it's probably d ). This has been going on for six months. It's driving me crazy. It's costing plenty e.g. $ 200 for a 30-minute session with a neurologist. I have probably taken 12 Excedrin in as many hours, as well as countless prescription drugs. Excuse me while I whine. I'm sure to delete this later but for the moment, I'm writing just to focus single-mindedly on something and distract myself from the pain."

(From the artist's website, April 2000)

"I was in a strange headspace yesterday, partly migraine and the rest impossible to describe except to mention that I suddenly had a very clear memory of my brother's apartment in Washington D.C. I could see it all very clearly. I was four years old when I saw that apartment and don't think I've thought about it since then. The mind is a mystery - is everything stored in our memory, waiting to be reawakened, remembered, decades later for no apparent reason? I'll have to finish reading Palaces of Memory: How We Build the Worlds Inside Our Heads [Johnson, 1991] which I put down last Spring."

(From the artist's website, February 2002)

Hallucinations of remembered scenes as aura symptom in migraine?

Hallucinations of remembered scenes are a well known aura symptom in temporal lobe epilepsy (Robinson and Watt, 1947). Dirk Hine's report suggests that such paroxysmal hallucinations of vivid memories from past events may also occur as migraine aura symptom, representing a variety of the phenomenon of palinopsia, i.e. the persistence or recurrence of visual images after the removal of the exiting visual stimulus object. A similar observation of delayed palinopsia in a migraineur was reported by Lindner and colleagues (1996) who had a patient who hallucinated "landscapes seen several weeks before" and the "image of 'Garfield' seen 2 days before the first attack on a sticker".

Are you acquainted with similar phenomena associated with your migraine attacks?
Please contact Dr Klaus Podoll if you wish to share and discuss your experiences.

"Dear Dr. Podoll, You have my permission to publish my texts. I also have some more data for you: I noticed during a migraine last week a heightened sense of color and pattern, i.e. colors were much more bright and vibrant, and patterns (in particular, those in an oriental carpet) were much more pronounced. The experience was very similar to that of taking a mild dose of LSD. Best regards, Dirk Hine"
