George BoereeArtist's WebpageGeorge Boeree, A Migraine Aura, 2005. © 2005 George Boeree (http://www.ship.edu/~cgboeree/aura.gif, June 2, 2005) "I put that image up for fun, but you are correct: It is very much what I experience. What is not illustrated is that it begins small and expands over a period of about an hour until it moves 'beyond' the orbit of my eye. For many years, it was a strong indicator that a migraine was coming. My migraines were concentrated on the right side of the back of the head, along a line from my neck to the crown of my head. I always imagined it was a vein running under my skull that was hurting. I had few other symptoms, but the pain was often extreme and lasted for the whole day or night. I have since discovered that simple ibuprofen (a somewhat large dose) could stop the migraine, especially if taken very early. In the last 10 years (I am 53), the migraines have almost disappeared. But, oddly enough, I still occasionally get the aura without the pain!" (Email to Klaus Podoll, June 3, 2005) "By the way, perhaps you noticed that it is a animated graphic with only two images, and yet it gives a rather strong sense of movement. Perhaps the neural mechanisms are likewise simple on-off sequences." (Email to Klaus Podoll, June 3, 2005) Author: Klaus Podoll
