Memories of a Migraine

Laurieann Lepper Dygowski, Memories of a Migraine, 2003. © 2005 Laurieann Lepper Dygowski (http://www.dygowski.com/intuitive.html, July 30, 2004)

"This painting is what I call intuitive. Intuitive means to me: what I feel, what is deep inside of me, in my brain, the images I have to try and pull out of my mind. Though a very unpleasant experience, migraine headaches are a part of my life, and putting a visual representation of them on paper was the reason I did the painting.

Before putting paint to paper, I closed my eyes, and tried to remember the way I felt during one of my headaches. Notice, I said 'my', because no one has the same experience, though maybe some of the same elements, during a migraine, but never the same experience.

What I tried to express is the experience of hot and cold, the turmoil of my body trying to just relax, trying to ignore the pain, but it is always there, with small spots of 'cool relief' (the blues and purples).

The yellow was predominant, to represent the bright lights, and the heat, and how it seems to overtake me. The paint swatches (half circle, lower left) represents my body moving trying to keep the pain away, turning and twisting while I lay down.

The coiled, circular colors, the reds, represent how my stomach feels when I fight the feeling to loose my meal.

When having a migraine, there is nothing I can think of but the pain, and how to get rid of it. My mind and body are in a constant fight to control what seems to be uncontrolable. That is what I represent in this art as the odd, different shapes, uneven edges, jutting legs of color, sort of the chaos in my mind."
