National Migraine Art Competition   Migraine Art Exhibition

In the December 1981 issue of the 'Migraine Newsletter', Peter Wilson summarized the outcome of the first National Migraine Action Association. Judging took place on 1st July 1981 and prizes were presented by Dame Vera Lynn on 15th.

The Art of Pain and Suffering

By Peter Wilson

Pain and suffering have frequently inspired great artists. With this in mind, the British Migraine Association and WB Pharmaceuticals launched a National Migraine Art Competition in the autumn of 1980.

Competitors were asked to paint or depict their impressions of any of the six forms of visual disturbance which herald a classical migraine attack. There were categories for adult entrants and for children, with prize-money amounting to more than £ 800.

Good coverage in the national, provincial and medical press and, of course, our own quarterly newsletter, resulted in well over 300 entries by the time the competition closed on June 1st.

In order to judge the entries in appropriate surroundings, an exhibition was mounted in the City of London Migraine Clinic. The judges were Richard Calvocoressi, Curator of the Modern Art Collection at the Tate Gallery, who is a migraine sufferer; Dr. J.N. Blau, the Honorary Director of the City of London Migraine Clinic; John Liddell, representing the British Migraine Association; and Derek Robinson representing WB Pharmaceuticals.

Although the judges had an extremely difficult task they finally selected the winners shown overleaf.
