"I've mentioned art and migraine in one breath, so to speak, here at WC [WetCanvas], I haven't got an email yet!! but then, my email is not for public use here anyway.. I've even done a digital pic of the aura I experienced... they are very pretty.. I think I found the trigger for the actual aura.. licourice, in my case... I haven't had a recurrance. still get the headaches though.. (as I was before).. let me know if it is genuine, I'd be interested"

(Gill Knox, WetCanvas, Subject: Did anyone else get this email?, November 21, 2003; addition in square brackets by Klaus Podoll)

"I got my first 'auras' recently.. I am 50 now...

I discovered by detective work that the trigger for the aura in my case, was licorice!!! I had not had any for years, and I bought a pack, which I nibbled now and then over the entire 3 or so months I got the auras.. I get none now, and I will not touch licourice again.. never like it all that much anyhow..

I knew to take simple pain relievers (you call one Tylenol I believe.. we call it Panadol) or aspirin (if you are allowed it).. Be wary of special prescriptions for migraine.. try over the couter stuff first.. make sure your Dr knows what you are taking too..

I got a check up with my Doctor at the first event of aura, to rule out high BP, etc, but it was just like you describe, and it actually sounds very typical of what patients used to describe to me too..

See your Doc., see if you can find a food trigger... that will make it so much simpler...

Here is my drawing of what the aura looked like to me at it's largest.. it's normal for it to start small and increase with a 'blind' spot where you try to focus.. I set it against some scenery to give you an idea of how it interferes with vision...

Hugs though, it's scary.."

"by the way the aura was fascinating.. once I realised what it was.. I watched it.. it's like a personal light show!! I always took a pain reliever at first sign of the aura and a headache never eventuated.. But this can happen too, aura and no migraine.."

(Gill Knox, Wetcanvas, Subject: Is this a migraine, March 17, 2004)

"the lights really did flash.. sort of like a strobe... (my first episode was while playing a computer game (a side scrolling one.. NON violent!!).. and I thought it was the screen acting up!!!"

(Gill Knox, Wetcanvas, Subject: Is this a migraine, March 18, 2004)

"Sure you can reproduce this.. I no longer get these phenomena, so I'm glad I went to the effort to reproduce the event as I saw it."
