"I get them on a regular basis... if you don't get them maybe this will help you understand how it feels..."

(Fantasy Art Gallery of Elfwood, September 4, 2002)

"Recently, a doctor in Germany has contacted me about the drawing he wants to include it in a paper about artists who suffer from migraines, I'm honored and eager to see what happens..."

(Fantasy Art Gallery of Elfwood, June 19, 2003)

"As I recall I drew several of 'Migraine' before finally coming to this one I put on my site. It began as doodling in the corners of high school notebooks, so I suppose the years would be between 1990 and 1992. I suppose the drawing came from a need to communicate what I felt when the migraine would occur, seeing as I spent quite a bit of time in the nurse's office in a dark room lying down until the pain passed. I was about 17 when the worst migraine I had ever had (before or since) came on. I was sent home, where I stayed in bed for 3 days, unable to keep food down, and unable to open my eyes when even the slightest amount of light was present. During the most intense pain I blacked out, all I remember was that my mother was holding me as I screamed and screamed until I passed out. We were poor and could not afford a doctor's care. I could not be moved without suffering intense pain, no drugs seemed to work. The pain shown in the artwork was the most common type I had shown. It felt as if a hammer was driving a nail into the optic nerve behind my eye. I would feel ennervated and sometimes I would cry from intense pain. I felt helpless and frustrated. There was also some tension and pain in my neck, enough to feel as if my head was being torn off. The art reflects what I physically and emotionally felt and had trouble showing others."
