"I have had SS [Scintillating Scotoma] for about 15 years now, with episodes occuring irregularly, sometimes years between episodes, but weekly over the last few months since suffering a burst appendix. Sure wish anybody had a kind of clue about what causes this - I get a different explanation from every doctor. I think my experience had deeply affected my work as an artist."

"I am fascinated by the impact of brain functions on my art, especially in my new work 'Through the Green Fuse' which has been an absolute sensation since its release last year."

(Email to Klaus Podoll, July 15, 2003)

"My migraine experiences were, at first, seen only as a barrier to my ablility to express myself artistically (1988). My work is not now, nor has it ever been, about me. It is about finding evidence of divinity in the world as it reveals itself to me. My experience with scintillating scotoma has had the same impact on my work that my experimentation with hallucinogens had early in my life, which is to say that I understand that reality is a very malleable concept, and no more than that. This knowledge is expressed in all my artwork, which is created and designed to invite viewers to participate with me in an intimate, loving and transcendent view of the world.

With my B&W work, e.g. Crystal Fen, this is accomplished by careful subject selection followed by hours of darkroom work to render the vision successfully. With work from the 'Through the Green Fuse' portfolio, e.g. Cortaderia Selloana, I abandoned photographic traditions in the interest of approaching raw film as the painter approaches raw canvas, letting my vision be my guide. While these images appear similar to the symptoms of migraine, this was not a conscious choice. My desire was to image life itself.

Beauty and Wonder abound!"
